FACTS ABOUT SWIMMING
Three thousand three hundred eight (3,308) cases of accidental drowning recorded in the United States last 2004, averaging to nine people per day (CDC, 2006).
Twenty-six percent (26%) of children whose age ranges from 1 to 4 died from drowning in 2004 (CDC, 2006). In general, statistics shows that fatal drowning ranks as the second leading cause of children’s death in the said age bracket.
For every drowning death, there is 1 to 4 nonfatal submersions which result in hospitalization. Concerning children who, at the time they arrive at the emergency department, still need cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) they have a poor prognosis. Records show that at least 50% of those who survived suffered from major neurologic impairment.
Highest drowning rates are noted in children under five and adolescents between the ages of 15 to 24.
Around 5,000 children aged 14 and under are hospitalized due to unintentional drowning related cases, of which 15 percent die in the hospital and as high as 20 percent suffer from severe and permanent neurological disability.
Seventy percent (70%) of the total number of preschoolers who drown are with their parents at the time of the drowning while 75 percent have been out of sight for five minutes or less.
WHAT HAS RESEARCH FOUND?
Swimming skills help. Taking part in formal swimming lessons reduces the risk of drowning among children aged 1 to 4
years. However, many people lack basic swimming skills. A CDC study6 about self-reported swimming abilityfound that:
Younger adults are reported to have greater swimming ability than older adults.
Self-reported ability increased with level of education.
Among racial groups, African Americans are reported to have the most limited swimming ability.
Men of all ages, races, and educational levels are consistently reported of greater swimming ability than women.
Seconds count-learn CPR. CPR performed by bystanders has been shown to save lives and improve outcomes in drowning victims. The more quickly CPR is started, the better the chance of improved outcomes.
Life jackets can reduce risk. Potentially, half of all boating deaths might be prevented with the use of life jackets.
Tips to help you stay safe in the water
Learn to Swim. Formal swimming lessons can protect young children from drowning. However, even when children have had formal swimming lessons, constant, careful supervision when children are in the water, and barriers, such as pool fencing to prevent unsupervised access, are still important.
Learn Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). In the time it takes for paramedics to arrive, your CPR skills could save someone’s life.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT EDUARDO’S RESORT SWIMMING FOUNDATION, INC.
How can I join Eduardo’s Resort Swimming Foundation, Inc. swim team? Swim team is available at Eduardo’s Resort Swimming Foundation, Inc. known as the Club Team. Club Team members are usually
members of the sports club venue. Luckily, in other sports club, non-members are allowed to participate as long as they have a
friend who is a member and is willing to be their sponsor. Additionally, they have to pay for the pool fees which amount to P100 to P200
per session during enrolment. Even in other schools, for instance, their Club Program is only available to those students enrolled in their schools.
What benefits can they get in joining Eduardo’s Resort Swimming Foundation, Inc.? The Varsity Team members must be enrolled in the school prior to joining this program. There are privileges granted for those who have successfully been accepted as members. They have the chance to compete in the league hosted by the Southern Tagalog Swimming Association (STASA) and Philippine Swimming Inc. (PSI). Also, they get the opportunities to be a member of the national team when they achieve the qualifying time. In some cases, some of the members receive offers from top colleges and universities for UAAP and NCAA tournaments and are granted with scholarships.
Will joining a swim team be detrimental to my child’s academics? Sports and academics, when balanced, can both provide a child with holistic education. Children who are involved in sports learn
to be disciplined in their studies. Some parents have reported that their children have become more responsible in their
studies ever since they joined a swim team. This is true since their participation in sports develops better their
skills in managing time and organizing their own daily schedule.
A good balance can be achieved by ensuring that homework or projects are accomplished right after the school hours or during their
breaks. Doing such works can be continued after training while they are still in the adrenaline-fueled state. During periodic exams
or finals weeks, training is set aside to give children ample time for reviewing their lessons.
I am not agreeing in exposing kids to a competitive environment in an early age.
Are the students always pushed to win medals? As a “child-friendly” organization, Eduardo’s Resort Swimming Foundation Inc. focuses on developing positive attitudes
among children as they engage themselves in sports. When they are exposed to competition, they are taught on the significance of
having fun as the main priority. Competition becomes detrimental to children when the only objective is to win.
Aside from encouraging the kids to learn the sport positively, other objectives are establishing in them good teamwork,
developing positive attitudes towards their opponents, respecting their fellow officials and competitors, and experiencing
the rewards of hard work. Moreover, in order to develop in them determination and diligence, they are taught that each
child is a winner for as long as he or she gives his or her best and accepts the results with the right attitude and a
motivation to do better next time.
How can I encourage my child to join the team? He’s very conscious about his overweight body. Tell him/her that there are lots of swim team members that are a bit overweight, yet some are very strong swimmers. Let him/her
realize that he/she could forget his/her insecurities during the training and also with the rigors of regular training and proper diet;
he/she would acquire a well-toned physique. If he/she is really conscious at the beginning, provide him/her with some jammers or
cycling shorts type swim suits. A rash guard or a round neck top made of nylon or spandex material is recommended. Just ensure that
they are both skin tight in order for the body to glide freely in the water.
Can children swim even if they have asthma? Yes. Swimming is said to have long term benefits to children suffering from asthma. You may check the article

However, in an event of an asthma attack, he/she should refrain from swimming temporarily and take him/her prescribed medications.
